Written Assignment 2

I am in love this photograph, it just grabs me every time I see it.  The photographer is a man named Danny Goldfield and the story was about all different children living in New York City.  This was a young boy by the name of Basim from Iraq. So why did I choose a Life magazine cover?  Well, when I was a child my mum had Life magazines from all different decades and I would just sit for hours looking through them at all of the photographs.  It blew my mind that people could capture so much thought and emotion into a photo.  I believe this photo did just that, captured happiness and yet solitude all at once, absolutely amazing.  I also love that the photographer blurred out the back of this photo and made it a closed frame in order to really emphasize the child's face, breath-taking.

Writing Assignment #1

This is a photograph done by a man named Man Ray in 1932 called Glass Tears.  I was looking around for photographs that spoke to me and then it clicked, I love the Dadaism art era, so why not look at images from that specific era?  There are many that spoke to me because many of them are contorted and meant to show the rawness of human beings.  This particular photo does just that; having just broken up with her boyfriend, you can tell that she is very sad and crying “glass tears”.  Although my boyfriend and I are very happy, who hasn’t felt like their tears are magnified and permanent for all to see?  Also, I love that she is looking away as to keep the onlooker of the photograph curious.  Not only do I love the rawness and curiosity of it all, but the amazing detail of her face, the tears, and the mascara, which has tiny little beads in it.  This photo was simply breathtaking and I felt, as though I was in her mind, it’s sad, but very captivating.

Erica Yanez - Critique!!

1) Where is the pop of color?

2) Did the pop of color make sense in this composition?

3) Is the composition balanced? If so, what elements are creating the balance?

4) What is the exposure like? Well exposed? Over exposed? Under exposed?

5) What about the range of tones (lights and darks) in the image?

6) What would you change about it if you would have taken the image?

7) Does this image evoke a mood or feeling?

8) Overall, what do you think about the image?

A) ATM Picture

The pop of color is in the ATM sign.
Yes, the "pop" made sense and flowed throughout the picture.
Very balanced, while the ATM sign was predominant, there is a flow of dark to light in the background with the red light.
Under exposed, but that is what made the colors pop so well.
Wide range of tones is this photograph.
I wouldn't change anything, I really like this photograph, its colors, its balance, and its odd point of view.
For me it evokes a feeling of eerie-ness, like I'm walking down a dark street all alone...
Like I said before, I really enjoy this image overall, great job!

B) Street Art

1-The pop of color for me is in the pink butterflies/flowers.
2-The pop made sense, but all of the colors are pretty bright so to see exactly where the pop is is a little difficult.
3-It doesn't look balanced to me, something is throwing me off, maybe the fact that the main subject is drifting away, or maybe that the wall ends and there is another building and sky at the top?
4-The exposer is perfect on this photograph, not too bright, not too dark.
5-The range of tones is not very abrupt, all looks bright and colorful to me.
6-I would change the fact that not one color stands out, and create that effect, really hone in on one color.
7-A bright and whimsical feel to me :)
8-This image is nice, the horizontal perspective and the neat street art, but I do think that one color should have popped more.

C) State Sign

1-Pop of color is in the neon sign that says "State".
2-The pop definitely makes sense is this photograph.
3-Not completely balanced, but I had to look at it for a moment to figure out why. One side is completely black while the other side has a yellow lighted building.
4-Under exposed, but it needed to be like that for the color to pop.
5-Good range of tones!
6-I wouldn't change anything, this photo is neat!
7-A little of a joyous feeling because of the signs colors, like I'm at a fair!
8-I really enjoy this picture, makes me feel like I'm going to a carnival!

D) Colorful Banners

1-All throughout the banners there are pops of color! Yellow, orange, red with a clouded over sky, love this picture!
2-The pop of color makes sense completely.
3-Very balanced, banners just flow to each other.
4-Exposure looks perfect.
5-The beams and sky being the darker non-focal points and the banners being the brights.
6-I wouldn't change anything!
7-Looks like a city street near a park, feel like I'm walking my nieces to the park on a cloudy but nice day, a good feeling.
8-I love this picture like I said before, great lighting and colors and well-balanced, awesome!

E) Angel

1-The pop of color is splashed all over this painting, but what stood at to me was the child's t-shirt.
2-The pop makes sense, but I had to look at it for a second to see what grabbed me.
3-It seems balanced to me, the main focal-point is right in the middle so I think that's why.
4-Perfect exposure.
5-Lights and darks are well shown in this photograph, light in the sky and in some of the painting, and dark on the right side from the buildings shadow.
6-Nothing, this photograph is interesting to me.
7-Reminds me of God and all his kindness. Not only is the painting about God, but on the left side the sky is so bright and it's like God is there.
8-I like this image, grabs me and pulls me in. Well balanced, bright colors when really looking and a good feeling.

F) Mosaic

1-The pop of color is in the long blue mosaic.
2-Yes, the pop of color makes sense and really jumps out of the image!
3-Almost balanced except for in the distance, the trees showing, threw me off a little.
4-Exposure is perfect!
5-Darks in the top and bottom of the photograph, and lights in the bright blue mosaic. Also, there is a bit of dark throughout the mosaic which I really liked.
6-Just change the fact that those trees are in the background.
7-I think it evokes the feeling of going to Seaworld, fun!
8-I really like this image with its point of view and its striking tones of color.

G) Red Tunnel

1-Pop of color is in the bright red tunnel.
2-The pop of color makes complete sense in this image, really grabs me!
3-Feels balanced to me because it's slowly going brighter as you look at the picture.
4-A tiny over-exposed but it had to be in order to make the tunnel pop out the way it does.
5-Dark tones on the ground, and light tones at the end of the tunnel. The red tunnel is actually right in the middle of dark and light tones and I think that why it seems balanced.
6-I wouldn't change anything, like I said before, I think it needed to be a little over-exposed so that the red could really pop the way it does.
7-I think it evokes a calm feeling of walking with my headphones in in a park.
8-This image is calming and flowing, I like it!

H) X

1-In the yellow X and in the stream of red fabric on the right side.
2-It makes complete sense.
3-Not balanced, but it doesn't look bad.
4-A little over-exposed, but once again, that's what made the colors pop the way they do. Made the red fabric be slightly brighter along with the yellow X.
5-Yellow X, soft blue sky, and the red banners on the right side are all lighter tones, while the red Xs' seem like the dark tones.
6-I wouldn't change anything.
7-I like the yellow X, he seems like the odd man out and who doesn't feel like that sometimes?! It's a good thing though, he's the bright one that shines through!
8-I find this image inviting and interesting.

I) Jersey and Shoes

1-The yellow in the shoes and shirt are what pop to me.
2-The pop of color does make sense.
3-Very balanced, right in the middle and there are only 3 colors in the whole picture swimming in a sea of black, creates a balance to me.
4-Perfect exposure.
5-Lights include the white and yellow, and the dark tone is the black throughout the image.
6-Almost too simplistic to me, but some others would love that in a photograph, I would've crazed it up a little more!
7-No feelings really.
8-I like this image, but like I said, I think it looks to perfect, I want to mess it up!

J) Shoe Tower

1-The pop of color is all throughout the shoes! Most predominate to me is the top shoe and the pink bottom of the bottom shoe.
2-Yeah, it makes sense.
3-Not balanced to me, to be perfectly balanced I think that the bottom shoe needed to be as bright as the top shoe.
4-Perfectly exposed.
5-Lights in the colors that pop, and darks in the middle shoe and in the black background.
6-Once again, as I said in the image above, I would mess it up a bit, get crazy with all of those fun colors! Get them running on the road or thrown on the ground with an odd darker background.
7-No feeling.
8-It's a neat image, but I think it could've been a little more wild!

All of your photographs were interesting and they are all very well taken, very crisp and clean. I had fun critiquing them! Great job!
